This year's Cayuga Reads events include book discussions, a movie, and open houses that celebrate Auburn's history.
Seymour Library, 176-178 Genesee St., Auburn, will host an open house in its History Room from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. Visitors are invited to look through old yearbooks, newspapers and other items from the library's collection that depict Auburn from the 1940s through today.
Book discussions will be offered at a variety of times at both Seymour Library and Bourke Library at Cayuga Community College. Book discussions are scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Seymour Library; noon Thursday, Oct. 13, at Seymour Library, 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Bourke Library at Cayuga Community College, 197 Franklin St., Auburn, and 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Bourke Library at Cayuga Community College. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St., is hosting a discussion of the book at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.
A reception for the winners of essay and photography contests will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, 1879 West Genesee Street Road, Auburn.
The movie Pleasantville will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Irene Bisgrove Theater at Cayuga Community College. The 1998 movie follows two teenagers who, finding themselves in a 1950s sitcom, begin to profoundly change a complacent world. The movie stars Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, Jeff Daniels, William H. Macy and Joan Allen.
This year's Cayuga Reads events close with an open house and visit with Ormie King, long-time Auburn resident and unofficial historian, at 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Bourke Library, Cayuga Community College. King's collection of photographs, scrapbooks and memorabilia documenting the history of Auburn and Cayuga County is housed in the Local History Room at Bourke Library.
